Martin Luther King Ceremony Held At Central Church Of Christ

Last updated on Tuesday, January 10, 2012

(BEDFORD) - This year’s Martin Luther King Day ceremony will be held at the Central Church of Christ.

Officials at the church are thankful their new building can serve the community. The church was destroyed by fire two years ago.

Earlier this year, Clarence Brown, who organizes the annual March for Unity and related King Day events, attended Central Church of Christ and asked elder Wilbur Fields if the church would host the annual ceremony.

The commemoration will begin at 2 p.m. Jan. 15 in the Lawrence County Courthouse. After an observance in the building, participants typically make a symbolic march around the public building to express unity.

From there the observance will move to the church at 12th and N Street. Traditionally the services have featured remarks by local ministers and music by local musicians.

Fields said the Church of Christ elders, as well as song leader Dennis Blythe and pulpit minister Rick Leach, will have roles in the service.

The music probably will take a new turn to reflect the tradition of the hosts. The Central Church of Christ does not use instruments in its worship services.

The national holiday in King's honor will be celebrated Monday. But Jan. 15 is his actual birth date.
