(MARTINSVILLE) - About 25 residents were displaced from their homes after a fire damaged a Martinsville apartment building on Wednesday night.
At about 10 p.m., fire officials were dispatched to the Spring Lake apartments on reports of a fire. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire shooting from the roof of the building.
The 12 unit building is located on Lakeshore Drive. Ten were occupied.
"It smelled like cigarette smoke," said resident Linda Smith. "I'd never smelled it in the apartment before. I didn't realize what it was."
Officials said four units were damaged in the fire but all remain without utility service.
The Red Cross was on the scene Wednesday night and said they would shelter residents at the Holiday Inn overnight.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
