(MITCHELL) - Newly elected Mitchell Mayor Gary Pruett made some changes at the first Mitchell City Council meeting of 2012.
Mike Hardman was appointed as Mitchell's new police chief. Hardman will replace Jerry Presnell in that position. Hardman has been chief in the past and has been with the department for almost 30 years. Pruett asked residents to support Hardman's efforts during this "time of challenges."
Byron Steele will serve as Mitchell city attorney. Steele served in that position under former Mitchell Mayors Jerry Hancock and Butch Chastain.
Larry Harris was appointed as commissioner of the street department with Steve Burton serving as assistant commissioner.
Tyler Duncan will remain as head of the water and sewer department.
Pruett said he has other changes in mind, but was not ready to announce those at Monday night's meeting.
In other business, the council voted to have Nancy Miller to serve as city council president pro-tempore.
Nancy Tolliver filled the seat of her husband Gerald Tolliver during the meeting. Tolliver passed away Thursday at his home. Nancy also told the council that it was Gerald's wish to nominate Miller for the president pro-tempore position because of her experience in government.
Pruett told the public there would be a time during council meeting when the public could address the council, but he would put time limitation on discussions so everyone would have an opportunity to speak.
"We are your government and you all have the right to address your council," he said. "There will be a time to address your concerns."
