(BEDFORD) - The St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church Basketball team can finally play home games.
St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and school has existed in Bedford for more than a century, and the elementary school has fielded a boys basketball team in the annual grade-school tournament for roughly half that span.
Every single game was on the road and every single practice was held at a number of locations in town. St. Vincent has classes for kids through eighth-grade and has not formed any middle school teams. That was impossible with the lack of a home gymnasium.
All of that has changed since St. Vincent celebrated with the dedication of their new gymnasium that was built along 17th and J Street.
St. Vincent received its funding for the $1.3 million facility the old-fashioned way: they saved money and started a capital campaign 17 years ago. During the last couple of years the Capital Committee kicked things into high gear and the were able to raise the last portions of the funds that were need to start and complete the project.
The gym will also be used for band/music concerts and plays. Physical education classes; which use to be held outside or in the cafeteria, will now be held in the gym.
