(SALEM) - Salem Mayor David Bower has announced another major change in department heads as he starts his second four-year term at the helm of the city.
Bower said he has appointed Tom Day as fire chief. Day took over in that position, effective Wednesday.
Day is a veteran firefighter who Bower said he hopes will unify the department as it moves into the future.
Bower gave no reason for replacing Roger Pennington, whom he appointed as chief when he took office for his first term, other than to say that he wanted to see what someone new could do in the role.
At this point, Ron Wilcox remains assistant chief, although that's likely to change.Bower said he and Day are still discussing who would be best to work with Day in the role of assistant and plan to make an announcement next week.
Pennington will remain in the department. His rank is major.
Bower dispelled rumors that there had been any wrongdoing by Pennington leading to his decision to replace him.
