(BEDFORD) - United States Attorney Joe Hogsett says he pledged to offer support to Lawrence County prosecutors and law enforcement in cases where federal charges could be filed.
Some of those type of cases would involve drug trafficking and criminals who use firearms.
The Violent Crime Initiative put in place by Hogsett resulted in 103 firearm possession charges in 2010, an increase from 14 in 2009.
An advantage to filing federal charges, are criminals face stiffer sentences and less time reduced for good behavior. In federal prisons, inmates spend more time in jail.
