(WASHINGTON) - Patrolman Barry Hudson of the Washington Police Department is accused of violating WPD policy by using unreasonable force on a detainee at the Daviess County Security Center on Christmas Eve.
The Washington Board of Public Works and Safety, which is responsible for approving hiring, firing, discipline and other issues involving city police officers, met Monday night in executive session with Hudson and his attorney, Edward Merchant.
The board had met previously, on Jan. 6 and decided on disciplinary action to put into place for Hudson.
Merchant said Hudson was issued notice of that decision on Jan. 9. In a public meeting Monday following the executive meeting, the board voted to rescind its previous action, and board member Eric Bassler then made a motion to hold an evidentiary hearing before a final decision is made. The motion was seconded by board member Ralph Brummett and approved.
The public hearing was scheduled for 6 p.m. Feb. 20 in City Council Chambers. WPD Chief Mike Healy and Mayor Joe Wellman declined comment after the meeting, although Wellman did state that Hudson was initially suspended for five days, which the chief legally can do. Hudson was reinstated with pay until the hearing, Wellman added.
