(ENGLISH) - The criminal trial for former Paoli Community Schools Superintendent Alva Sibbitt Jr. has been continued to 9 a.m. on May 1 in Crawford Circuit Court.
The Sibbitt trial was scheduled to begin today. The trial was continued on a motion by the court. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. on April 5.
69-year-old Sibbitt was arrested Dec. 9, 2010. He is alleged to have rammed the Paoli Community Schools van he was driving into a parked patrol car, according to Indiana State Police Trooper Robert Lambert.
Sibbitt was charged with resisting law enforcement, a Class D felony; intimidation, a Class D felony; resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor; criminal recklessness, a Class A misdemeanor; and criminal mischief, a Class A misdemeanor. Sibbitt pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In late 2010, the Mitchell school board hired Sibbitt as superintendent. Sibbitt had left Paoli schools in late 2010 after having served as superintendent there since the 1970s. After the arrest and at the beginning of 2011, Sibbitt was suspended with pay from Mitchell schools.
At Sibbitt's request, the Mitchell board conducted a public hearing into the matter in March. On April 11, the board formally agreed to cancel Sibbitt's contract.
Sibbitt's attorneys requested a change of venue from Orange County because of pretrial publicity the case had received. Orange Superior Court Judge Michael Cloud agreed, granting the motion.
