(MARTINSVILLE) - 22-year-old Ruben Mancillas Jr. of Bloomington was arrested after he led police on a high-speed chase through Martinsville on Saturday.
Just before 10:30 a.m., police say a woman driving a vehicle westbound on Washington Street was hit from behind at the intersection of Jefferson and Washington streets by a white older-model Cadillac. According to police, Mancillas did not stop and drove southbound on Jefferson Street at a high rate of speed.
A short time later, witnesses saw the vehicle at the intersection of Cross and South streets before it was spotted by a Martinsville police officer. The officer radioed dispatchers with a report that the vehicle had failed to stop at the light and was traveling north on Home Avenue.
That is when the chase began. The Cadillac sped through the intersection of Ohio and South streets and hit another vehicle. The Cadillac, followed by a number of police cruisers, then went south on Ohio Street and then went through the Artesian Square shopping center parking lot.
That is when Morgan County Sheriff's Department and Martinsville Police forced the Cadillac off the road and it crashed into a utility pole. Mancillas jumped from the care and ran but was arrested on Leota Drive.
Mancillas has a criminal history in Morgan County. In 2008 he was charged with burglary, theft, auto theft and possession of marijuana. No one was injured in the chase.
