(DUGGER) - A decision on Town Marshal Dave Heaton’s job may not come until June - or later, according to Dugger Town Councilman Kermit King.
King says there are certain procedures that have got to be taken to dismiss someone and the council wants to make sure they follow them. They also need the advice of an attorney. The current town attorney Doug Followell, resigned his position last Wednesday.
But a special town meeting will be held as scheduled at 6 p.m., Thursday in the Community Center.
However, no public comment will be allowed, officials said.
Instead, Town Council President Dwight Nielson says he will read a public statement and then close the session.
Nielson suggested the statement was a general one, rather than one directed toward Heaton, whom he attempted to fire Jan. 9, claiming the marshal neglected his duties. He also tried to fire Utility Clerk Carolyn Settle, claiming she notified Heaton of the council's intent to fire him. Heaton and Settle have both attorney John Bodine to sue the town.
