(MITCHELL) - Nearly two dozen people met in Mitchell Monday to start looking at ways they can make their community stronger by starting a heritage fund through the Lawrence County Community Foundation.
Heritage funds are used to enhance smaller communities. Currently, there are six communities in Lawrence County that have heritage funds established through the community foundation, including Heltonville, Springville, Judah, Oolitic, Fayetteville and East Oolitic.
To start a heritage fund, the community must raise at least $5,000. That money is deposited and invested, and after three years of having at least an average balance of $5,000, the foundation will begin issuing community grants off the interest.
The grants can be used for a variety of charitable causes. In Springville, for example, the money generated has been used to create a park for the community.
Through the foundation and its endowments, Hope Flores, Executive Director of the foundation, said more than $9 million has been given back to the local communities.
She added the success of the community heritage program is directly dependent on the volunteers. Call 279-2215 to donate to the Mitchell Heritage Fund or for more information on the program and how it can help Mitchell.
