(MITCHELL) - Mitchell schools will be offering free meals for children and low-cost lunches for adults starting in June.
The Division of School and Community Nutrition of the federal Department of Education provides the money and the food.
The idea is to fill a nutritional gap that some families experience during the summer, when school is not in session. The meals follow the same nutritional guidelines the Department of Education sets for regular school lunches.
People age 18 and younger can eat free. Adults pay a modest fee, which will be determined later. Many details have to be settled for the Mitchell program. But the tentative plan calls for lunch to be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., starting June 4 and running through July 20, at Burris Elementary School.
