(MITCHELL) - Workers at Spring Mill State Park Inn have uncovered a wallpaper mural. The mural is about 10 feet long and between three to four feet in height.
The top is sculpted in rolling hills, a covered bridge sits on the left with a school house nestled among hills, a couple of barns, a farmhouse and cattle.
Property Manager Mark Young says he is not sure they will be able to save the mural, but, they will try and are looking at options. They may be able to remove the mural from the wall, or frame it and cover it for display, or they may just have to cover it back up again.
The mural was discovered during construction to make the inn compliant with American with Disabilities Act. To be compliant the inn was adding more rooms that were handicapped accessible. So construction began on the lower level of the inn, and during the tear-out phase workers found the mural near an area where a ramp was to be added.
As for the renovation project, Young said, "the rooms will be accessed from the hallway that leads from the game room into the guest wing. The steps on this level will be converted to a ramp, making them accessible to those with disabilities."
With the construction, one guest room will be lost because of the new configuration of the hallway. So the four rooms now in that area will become three, with one room becoming a suite.
Young said the elevator is also being upgraded. The elevator was not wide enough for someone in a wheelchair to turn around, so a larger carriage is being added.
Young added there will be two more phases of the remodeling project.
The public rest rooms off the lobby are not handicapped accessible and they are being upgraded. A power door off the ramp that leads from the front of the building to the dining room area to further assist guests with disabilities.
