Plaza Drive North Project Almost Complete

Last updated on Tuesday, February 7, 2012

(BEDFORD) - The Board of Works approved the final payment of an invoice for construction for the Plaza Drive North Project Monday afternoon.

The payment will be made when Crider and Crider fix a drainage problem near Mr. Gatti's. According to Utilities Director Misty Adams, there are a couple of wet spots that just won't dry up. She believe a drain could have been crushed, but no matter what the problem is the bill will not get paid until the problem is complete and Adam's inspects the site.

The project began under former Mayor Joe Klumpp and has relieved congestion on James Avenue on the west end of town.

The city hired Bonar Group in 2006 to serve as consultant on the road-building project. In December 2007 the Bedford Redeveloping Commission gave final approval for the sale of bonds up to $3.27 million over 20 years to fund the extension.

A year ago Crider & Crider bid $1.234 million dollars to build the thoroughfare from 16th Street north to John Williams Boulevard.

Though contractors encountered layers of hard rock, they were on target to complete the project by September 16th. But then storm water problems surfaced along James Avenue.

A new box culvert had to be installed to handle runoff. The drainage work, plus additional curb work and payment for night paving, so businesses would not be affected resulted in an additional $266,565 in costs.

The total cost of the project is $1,571,159.16.
