(BLOOMINGTON) - A 17-year-old Bloomington boy faces a felony charge after a rifle was found in his car parked outside a high school, police said.
The Bloomington High School North student faces one count of possessing a firearm on school property.
Bloomington police Sgt. Steve Kellams said school officials found the unloaded rifle in the student's car Tuesday morning after overhearing students talking about a possible gun in a classmate's car.
Kellams said the teen told school officials he went target shooting the night before and spent the night at a friend's house before heading to school. He said he forgot that the .22-caliber rifle was in his car.
The student was released to his parents, and his case has been referred to the county's juvenile probation department.
