(WASHINGTON) - Washington Mayor Joe Wellman’s top priority as the new mayor is replacing a major water supply line that runs almost the length of the city under VanTrees Street.
The line is 80 to 100 years old and supplies water to the east and northeast, as well as the Bedford Road water tower.
A few years ago the line was replaced to East 6th Street and the high school water tower, the rest of it is a 16-inch main that continues east to 21st Street.
Three breaks have occurred between 11th and 14th streets in the last 13 months. Wellman says continued deterioration and recurring breaks will only result in added overtime and repair costs, along with disruption of service to customers.
Wellman added the Southern Indiana Development Commission helped the city apply for $500,000 in Community Focus Funds - about half the estimated cost of the project. He said that should allow an upgrade from 6th to 14th streets.
