Backpacks Needed For Henryville Students

(HENRYVILLE) - In response to the tornadoes that ripped a path of destruction through Henryville and other southern Indiana communities March 2, Adams Funeral Home is spearheading a project to provide backpacks, school supplies and other treats to all 1,200 Henryville students.

Because of the damage to Henryville schools, students will be finishing up the year at other locations.

Elementary-age kids will begin Monday at a former parochial school building in New Albany, and the junior-senior high students won't start class until April 2, while a building in Scottsburg is being renovated to meet their needs.

The project has already received pledges from Heritage Christian School in Indianapolis, Southeast Christian Church in Louisville and Jasper Key Club. Jay C Food Stores has donated the use of a semi to store and transport the backpacks, she said.

School supply collections are under way in Seymour Community Schools, Seymour Middle School teacher Cheryl Fenton told school trustees on Monday night.

Once collected, the backpacks will be distributed through Adams Funeral Home.

How to help

Buy a gender-specific backpack for a child up to 18 years of age (new backpacks only)
Fill the backpack with items specific to the gender and age you selected (new items only). Some ideas include coloring books, crayons, little toys, books, school supplies such as notebooks, pens, binders, glue and paper, socks, card games, gift cards and sunglasses.
Put the filled backpack in a new garbage bag and write the gender and age on the bag.
Pack the garbage bag in a box that includes your return name and address and gender/age written clearly on the outside and mail it to: Adams Funeral Home, c/o Backpacks 4 Henryville, 209 S. Ferguson St., Henryville, IN 47126
