(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioner passed a resolution declaring April 3rd Astronaut Day. The resolution was presented by the Liberty Bell Committee to honor Lawrence County’s three astronauts, Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Charles Walker and Kenneth Bowersox.
The resolution reads:
A Lawrence County Commissioner Resolution declaring April 3 as the annual Astronaut Day in Lawrence County, Indiana.
Whereas, the first United States manned space flight was in 1961 and since that time many men and women have pursued and realized their dreams of flying in space, including three men from Lawrence County, Indiana and
Whereas, Lawrence County, Indiana has produced three astronauts, including: Virgil Ivan "Gus" Grissom; Charles David "Charlie" Walker; and Kenneth Dwane "Ken" Bowersox and
Whereas, Lawrence County celebrated the 50th anniversary of Gus Grissom's first flight into space aboard the capsule named Liberty Bell 7, and this tribute in July of 2011 brought awareness to Lawrence County's rich astronaut history and created the desire to preserve a long-lasting and permanent tribute to local astronauts; and
Whereas, Bowersox and Walker returned to Lawrence County in July of 2011 to honor Grissom's legacy of being the second American in space, and to bring educational opportunities to the citizens of this region; and
Whereas, Astronauts are highly trained professionals skilled at commanding, piloting, or serving as a crew member aboard a spacecraft, and they are specially trained in the natural sciences, mathematics, engineering and other fields; and
Whereas Astronauts, specifically, Grissom, Walker and Bowersox, represent brave and courageous human beings, who are both disciplined and motivated, serving as positive role models to members of this community:
Therefore, be it resolved this day, Tuesday, March 27, 2012, by the Commissioners of Lawrence County, Indiana: that April 3 is declared Astronaut Day.

*Treasurer Paula Stewart asked the commissioner to approve a lock box contract with Hoosier Hills Credit Union.
* Sheriff Sam Craig told the commissioner the department has applied for the COP's Grant.
