County To Lose DOC Prisoners

Last updated on Wednesday, March 28, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Yesterday there were 14 Department of Correction inmates at the Lawrence County Jail, but today there are only two.

Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig says the DOC contacted him saying they were coming to get the inmates.

"The number of DOC inmates has been dwindling over the years," Craig says. "We have known for several years that this was going to happen and the county has been planning for it and the lose of income."

The county receives $35 a day for each DOC inmates they house, or roughly $150,000 a year, according to County Auditor Billie Tumey.

"The money was placed in the general funds," Craig says. "The county knew the funds would be going away. The state has freed beds in their facility to move the inmates from local jails to their facilities to save state funds. We will still house DOC inmates, they just will not be staying for long periods of time."
