(BEDFORD) - The orange glow and smoke could be seen for blocks.
Bedford Firefighters arrived to flames and smoke bellowing out of the home at home at 2007 Washington Avenue. They had their hands full battling the blaze and saving surrounding property.
The fire was reported at 11:43 p.m. and firefighters were still on the scene this morning( 7:33 a.m.).
The homeowner David Arp and his family escaped uninjured. Arp is the owner of Evolution Tattoo on 16th Street.
"The cat even made it out," said Bedford Fire Chief Jon Wagner. "We believe the fire started in the kitchen area. Someone was cooking and when firefighters arrived the fire was burning free out of the rear of the house."
Battalion Chief Steve Haverly says the fire was difficult to fight because the house had multiple room and multiple roofs.
"We had an awful hard time with this one," he added. "The fire compromised the roofs and caused them to start falling in. We couldn't put firefighters inside the house or on the roof it was just too dangerous."
Haverly said one of the roofs was a metal one, which allowed the fire to be trapped underneath making it difficult to get to the blaze.
Wagner said the department had five fire hoses going, which is unusual.
"That is almost unheard of, that tells you how difficult this blaze was," Wagner added.
When firefighters realized the blaze was under control and the home was destroyed they turned their to saving the neighboring houses.
"Attentions had to shift...firefighers knew the neighboring houses needed protected," Wagner said. "Once they felt that was done they turned their attention back on the other home."
Wagner said a home on the north side did have some melted siding.
BFD Investigator David Wright will investigate the cause of the blaze. He was on the scene last night battling the blaze.
