Linton, Saddle Club Reach Deal

Last updated on Saturday, March 31, 2012

(LINTON) - Mark Stalcup, of the Greene County Daily World reports the City of Linton has reached agreement with the Greene County Saddle Club allowing the equine enthusiasts to continue use of municipal land.

"It will remain just the same as it has been," said City Council President Tony Richards.
The one-year contract renewal, which allows use of city properties north of Sunset Park for a lease fee of one dollar, was attained after discussions between city officials and Saddle Club members.

The land's well-suited for riding and camping, Mayor John Wilkes said, as it's located near the park's lake with impressive scenery.

"It's a beautiful piece of ground, and it should really be utilized as much as it can be," said Wilkes.

Ensuring the land's used by the public is the city's key concern, Wilkes said, and the Saddle Club will work with the city and its parks to increase promotions of their activities.

"We're going to try it for another year and see what happens," said Wilkes, who had previously raised questions about groups leasing city land for such a nominal amount.
"There's really not any issues," Wilkes said. "There's nothing bad, just some little things we are working out."

While the Saddle Club had originally agreed to build a horse arena on the property as part of the pact, that may not occur now.

"The arena hasn't been done, and I don't know if they can do it," Wilkes said. "However, that won't be an issue."

However, Wilkes said he walked away from the meeting with Saddle Club members impressed with the number of activities the group participates in annually.

"They ride, camp, and have other functions such as picnics and hayrides for the community," Wilkes said. "They do a lot that we didn't really know about until we spoke with them."
