Last updated on Monday, March 5, 2012

(LOOGOOTEE) - A Loogootee Man was arrested after he ran from police Friday night.

29-year-old Eric J. King was charged with resisting law enforcement, battery, false informing, public intoxication, and he is also being held on a petition to revoke probation in Lawrence County.

According to Martin County Sgt. Keith Keller he was on patrol working Operation Pull Over Blitz 70 when dispatch received a call reporting a possible impaired driver into the parking lot of St. Martin's Catholic Church in Whitfield.

Keller says he approached King and asked him to put his hands on the hood of the police cruiser so he could "pat him down." King started acting anxious and walking around the police car. Keller says he asked King several times to put his hands on the hood of the police car.

Keller says he then started to move toward King and that is when he pushed the officer and ran from the scene.

Keller chased King and about 50 feet later attempted to tackle King. King was able to get back on his feet and ran off. King lost his hat in the struggle.

King ran west on Brooks Bridge Road and then west across Highway 231,running into traffic.

King says he needed the chase and waited for backup.

A K-9 was able to pick up King's scent from his hat and tracked him for about a half a mile and then lost the scent.

At the same time, King was walking long Highway 231 trying to flag down a ride. The driver of the vehicle he flagged down was a Daviess County Police officer.
