Motorists On State Road 60 Face Delays

Last updated on Friday, March 2, 2012

(SALEM) - Motorists traveling on State Road 60 between Salem and Pekin may encounter delays just west of Southway Villa beginning today.

The highway will be closed for 20 minute intervals for the next several weeks while workers construct an overpass for the bypass.

The bypass is to circle east of Salem, linking State Road 135 on the south side of the city to SR 56 east of Salem near the intersection of Quaker Road.

The new highway will be just under four miles in length. Several bridges are being constructed as part of the project, including over the CSX railroad, \the West Fork of the Blue River, Martinsburg Road and Old State Road 160.

The bypass will become a state highway and is intended to reduce the amount of truck traffic traveling around the square in downtown Salem.

The contractor is Gohmanm Asphalt and Paving; construction cost is $5.5 million. The contract has a completion date of October 2012.
