(BEDFORD) - Cody Thatcher, an 8th grader at Bedford Middle School, outscored everyone to advance to the state finals in the MATHCOUNTS Competition.
MATHCOUNTS is a competitive program that pushes students to achieve more in mathematics. It consists of fun and creative problems that promote critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
The MATHCOUNTS competitions have written and oral rounds, as well as individual and team components. Participants advance through school, chapter and state competitions until the final 224 students are selected from 56 states and territories to advance to the MATHCOUNTS national competition held each May in Florida.
Thatcher scored 37 points in the individual scoring well ahead of second place with 27, allowing him to advance to the state round at Rose Hulman in Terre Haute. There Thatcher has a chance to compete for scholarships.
Cody is the son of Harvey and Holly Thatcher.
