Throop Elementary School Awarded $100,000 Grant

Last updated on Thursday, March 1, 2012

(PAOLI) - Throop Elementary School has been awarded a $100,000 grant. (Times-Mail)

Paula Mathers, a third-grade teacher at Throop, was at home on the day after Thanksgiving watching "Ellen" on TV.

When Ellen promoted the Target Corporation grants that would be given to deserving schools. Mathers did some research and then submit an essay telling why Throop deserved to share in the $5 million Target was giving to 50 schools.

Mathers didn't tell anyone she had applied for the grant. So When Throop Principal Sharon Tucker received a call from Target's community relations representative Laverne Knighton, a few weeks later saying they had been awarded the grant, she was in shock. It wasn't until later that Tucker realized Mathers had applied for the grant.

The money will be used to enhance student achievement with additional early literacy and technology resources. A news release from Target explains that the $5 million donation given to K-12 schools in 31 states is part of the company's commitment to education, which includes plans to give $1 billion for education by the end of 2015.
