(OOLITIC) - Oolitic Deputy Marshal Bill Allen says three vehicles on Lafayette Avenue and one on 7th Street were broke into early Thursday morning.
"All of the vehicles were unlocked," he says. "The thieves took money and other personal items. There were a male and female involved in the break-ins."
A vehicle owner on 7th Street saw the couple breaking into the car and tried to follow them, but lost them.
Then around 8 a.m. Bedford police stopped two people that matched the description of the man and woman who were breaking into the vehicles in Oolitic. Bedford police arrested the two on other charges and they were taken to the Lawrence County Jail.
Allen added, "I then went to the jail and interviewed the two. They were identified in a photo lineup as the two who broke into the vehicles in Oolitic."
Allen says the two are not being identified because the case has been turned over to the Lawrence County Prosecutor. Each is facing four counts of unlawful entry and one count of theft. The case is still under investigation and other charges could be filed.
"We want to warn residents about leaving items in their vehicle and leaving their vehicles unlocked," he says. "If you have to keep valuables in the vehicle, lock them in the trunk and not in sight tempting thieves. And always lock your vehicles."
