(BLOOMFIELD) - Teens Taking Action of The First Christian Church in Bloomfield will travel to Puerto Rico in June to serve in the mission field through the YouthWorks mission organization. (GC Daily World)
Teens Taking Action has worked together to attempt to raise the necessary money through craft and food sales, but they still need the majority of the fee for the trip. The goal is to collect $8,500, which includes plane travel and package price for the trip.
Events planned include a Yard Sale on April 14th. Donations for the yard sale will begin April 9th at the church. A Food for Books luncheon will be April 15th and a Parents Night Out Babysitting service will be May 4th. Other monetary sponsors are also being sought.
Please contact First Christian Church at (812) 384-4812 if interested in giving to this worthy cause.
Teens Taking Action is the high school youth group from the First Christian Church in Bloomfield. It is committed to a mission trip through YouthWorks in Puerto Rico on June 10-14. The group will be flying into San Juan on June 9 and meeting in Arecibo for orientation.
The majority of workers in Arecibo produce agricultural machinery, clothing, plastics, paper, and sporting goods. Forty-nine percent of residents, however, live below the poverty level and the unemployment rate is 16.3 percent. The mean annual salary for residents is $19,280 (lower than any state in the U.S.). (YouthWorksstatistics)
The mission activities will be concentrated in Arecibo. Examples of mission work include (but aren't limited to) offering children's programs, assisting at elderly centers, working in soup kitchens/homeless shelters, or assisting at thrift stores. Teens in the youth group and traveling to Puerto Rico include: Liza Bartlett, Tori Coffey, Elena Weddle, LexiPlace, Anna Mayfield, Katie Edwards, Emily Walker, Emily Edwards, Kayla Mendenhall, and Paige Shirley. The adult leaders include DeAnne Mayfield and Ashly Edwards.
Last year, Teens Taking Action traveled to Nashville, Tenn., to help rebuild a flood-ravaged 100-year old house. Past mission activities include a YouthWorkstrip to West Virginia, physical labor for local residents, and clothing and toy purchases for the local Family Life Center in Bloomfield.
Any prayers of support and/or monetary help are always welcome. Please contact the Bloomfield First Christian Church if interested in contributing to Teens Taking Action: 384-4812.
