(BEDFORD) - Members of the Bedford Urban Enterprise Association’s board of directors last week voted unanimously to cede to the city its 60-foot right of away along South Shawnee Drive from 29th Street to 35th Street.
Bob Bridge, of the Times-Mail, reports that most members of the board were not even aware the agency possessed the property rights. BUEA owned a 30-foot easement on each side of the road, which has been maintained by the city since it was first constructed.
The issue arose when Dan Kirk, City Planning Director and BUEA board member, was investigating a potential build site next to Dr. Ovais Raza's medical office at 3521 South Shawnee Drive.
"The prospective builder didn't want to go forward until all questions regarding the roadway were answered," Kirk explained.
Harold Turner, president of the BUEA board, said the organization didn't want to do anything to deter economic development.
"Considering all the accommodations the city has made for us in recent years," Turner said, "this is the least we can do."
Turner informed the board the old house on BUEA's property at Fourth and H streets has been demolished and debris hauled away by Doyle Hudson. The tract, about 2.5 acres, is listed at $99,900.
Turner said BUEA is still seeking to sell the former Penney's building and Downtown Convention Center most recently leased to Johnathan's Gym. That property is listed at $144,000.
