(BEDFORD) - A mail carrier found a hand gun in a mail box in the 200 block of Davey Cox Road.
Lawrence County Police are investigating.
Sheriff Sam Craig says the gun was not stolen and is unsure why someone would put the gun in the mailbox. Currently detectives are working with ATF to find the last registered owner.
"We believe someone wanted us to find the gun and that is why it was in the mailbox," Craig says. "This is a strange situation and we have a lot of unanswered questions."
Craig says he doesn't believe the gun was used in a crime.
"If that was the case it would have been thrown in the river or hidden somewhere," he added.
Craig asks that anyone with information about the gun call the sheriff's department.
