Lawrence County Museum Doll Dressing Contest

Last updated on Wednesday, April 25, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County doll maker Virginia Turner has given the Lawrence County Museum a Turner doll named “Judy D” for the Duke Energy World of Discovery.

The museum has acquired another Turner doll, "Susie," to be Judy D's friend. Judy D and Susie can teach kids about the clothes worn by girls throughout history, but to do this they need more clothes.

Children ages 4 to 12 are invited to team up with an adult and make historic outfits for the two dolls. A $100 prize will be awarded for the winning outfit, $75 for second place and $50 for third place. Cash prizes are furnished by Dee Rieber.

For more information, call the museum at 278-8575.

Contest Rules

Each team must be composed of at least two people, a child aged 4 to 12 and an adult, 18 or older. The same adult may partner with more than one child, and the same child may partner with more than one adult. A single team may also consist or more than one adult and/or child.

Each team must come to the Lawrence County Museum any Saturday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. through May 19, to sign up for the competition. Historic period(s) will be chosen for that team's outfit(s).

Teams may choose fabrics and trims from the museum's supplies or teams procure their own. Teams also may review historical costume information available at the museum or seek their own information for the written portion of the competition. The outfit designed should be period-appropriate for a girl between 8 and 12 years old.

In addition to the garments, teams are responsible for accessories needed to complete the outfit(s), including undergarments, shoes, socks and headgear, if worn during the historic period of the outfit. Accessories may be drawn from Judy D and Susie's current wardrobe, they may be handmade or they may be purchased by the team.

All outfits must be submitted to the Lawrence County Museum before 4 p.m. on June 21.
