Loogootee To Erect State Championship Road Signs

Last updated on Wednesday, April 11, 2012

(LOOGOOTEE) -The state basketball finals may be over, but the exploits of the Class A state champion Loogootee Lions continue to reverberate.

Mayor Noel Harty announced during Monday night's Loogootee Çity Council meeting that the basketball team would be honored as the grand marshals for Summerfest.

Harty also said public donations would be accepted toward four new signs which will be erected at entrances to the city from all four directions. He proposed a design which would have brick on both sides of the sign, while the sign itself would display past accomplishments, recognize the state champion team and still leave room for future successes.

The mayor estimated the new signs will cost between $15,000 and $20,000, and he hopes all the construction work will be performed by companies from Loogootee or Martin County.

"I've had people ask me to put up new "Welcome to Loogootee" signs," Harty said. "This is something everyone can donate to."

A bank account will be opened at a Loogootee bank to accept public donations for the new signs. Harty said special recognition will be given to those who donate at least $1,000 to the project or land for the signs.
