(CLAY TOWNSHIP) - Clay Township officials are considering how to restore the dozens of toppled monuments at Sandhill Cemetery and improve maintenance of the old burial site.
Headstones dating to the mid-1800s were damaged in what authorities are investigating as a criminal act of vandalism. Maj. Todd Noblitt of the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department said detectives had not received any leads as of Tuesday but remain hopeful.
"I imagine it'll be just a matter of time before somebody says something, I hope," Noblitt said. "This goes to the lowest of lows, vandalizing cemeteries."
Meanwhile, township officials are trying to figure out how they can reset the monuments. They also are seeking bids from mowing companies for the job of maintaining Sandhill and another old cemetery in Clay Township.
