(BLOOMINGTON)- Bloomington police are awaiting results of DNA tests after skeletal remains were found in a remote area of eastern Illinois.
The remains were found March 10 in woods near the town of Newton, Illinois.
Bloomington police contacted authorities there about the find as they continue to investigate the case of missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer, who was last seen in June 2011.
Police in Illinois said there was no evidence of a grave and no obvious trail leading to the remains.
The Illinois State Crime Lab is analyzing the remains. Results could come this month.
"We, like many other agencies, are waiting for results from their investigation to determine if it might be related to our case," Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters said via email Monday.
Newton is 2 1/2 hours from Bloomington.
