Sullivan Man Rescued From Long Lake

Last updated on Wednesday, April 4, 2012

(DUGGER) - Charles Mobley, 66, of Sullivan, was rescued from Long Lake, Tuesday night, by a Indiana Conservation Officer.

Long Lake is located approximately 3 miles west and 1 mile south of Dugger.

Mobley had been clinging to his overturned fishing boat in the water for over an hour, when he was rescued.

At approximately 7:20 p.m., Brittany Parr was driving past and noticed an object in the water which seemed out of place.

Parr stopped and noticed that there was a man clinging to an overturned boat in the water.

She called out to him with no reply. After several attempts the man responded, "Call for help!" The 911 call was made to Sullivan County Dispatch.

Indiana Conservation Officer Matt Landis arrived and launched his boat on Long Lake, with the help of a bystander, Eric Head, the two were able to pull Mobley out of the water at approximately 7:40 pm.

Mobley was unable to move and his body was in an advanced state of hypothermia. He was taken to Sullivan County Community Hospital by the Sullivan County Ambulance Team where he remains hospitalized.

Landis said, Mobley had a life jacket in the boat but was not wearing it at the time. He had been attempting to place a fish into a wire basket when he fell overboard, capsizing the 10 foot boat. Clinging to his boat undoubtedly kept him alive until help arrived.

Indiana Conservation Officers would like to remind the public that even though there have been above normal temperatures the water temperature remains deceptively cold.

A sudden immersion in cold water can cause a person to hyperventilate, quickly lose dexterity, and cause muscles to cramp. Water causes the human body to lose heat 25 times faster than the same temperature air.
