(BLOOMINGTON) - Three people were killed in a fiery crash in Bloomington Monday night.
Now police are working to determine their identities and what led to the crash.
Just before midnight Monday, a small-sized 4-door car was traveling southbound in the 7000 block of South Victor Pike in Bloomington when the driver failed to negotiate a curb, ran off the road and slammed into a tree.
A neighbor down the road saw the accident and tried to pry the car doors open. By the time the neighbor arrived, the car was fully engulfed in flames. The man wasn't able to open the doors and by the time police arrived and all three passengers burned to death.
The property owner said detectives canvassed several acres of the surrounding farm land with flashlights for hours afterwards. Police won't say what they were searching for or if there was a fourth person involved.
The names of the three victims have not yet been released. Autopsies are being conducted in Terre Haute.
