Two Jasonville Men Bike To Florida To Raise Money For Cancer Society

Last updated on Friday, April 13, 2012

(JASONVILLE) - It’s called “Bike for Life,” but for Jesse Beller and his cousin Garrett Caldwell, it will assuredly be a life experience as they cycle 1,500 miles to Panama City, Fla. from Jasonville to raise money for a cancer cure and to bring awareness to the American Cancer Society.

Jo Chiparo, of the Greene County Daily World reports, the men, both college students, will leave Jasonville on June 4 for their three-week trip.

"I have never done anything like this before," noted Beller. "This is a brand-new experience."

Beller added that the idea for the trip came about when his grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"She is now cancer free, and the American Cancer Society paid all of her medical expenses," Beller said.

Beller and Caldwell plan to travel 100 miles a day and will spend their first night in Owensboro, Ky. A chase car will follow the entire trip.

Beller says he is excited about the event and has been training every day on his Trek 1.2 bike, usually at Shakamak State Park.

"I will ride about five hours a day when training if I don't have school and at least two hours on school days," he noted. "We have our trip all mapped out and are sticking to small towns along the way. The trip is all I can think and talk about."

Trying to raise money for the trip, the first fundraiser will be an Indian taco dinner this Saturday between 4 and 7 p.m. at the Jasonville Senior Citizen Building. The price of a ticket is $6.

"I would like to thank Carl Melchert who is going to cook free of charge for the dinner," Beller added.

Also, if anyone would like to sponsor the bicycle trip, T-shirts will be provided with the sponsor's name and logo on the back of the shirt.

For additional information or to purchase a ticket to the dinner, call (812) 798-8857 or e-mail bike.for.life.2012@hotmail.com.
