(BLOOMINGTON) - Maria Salis-Mattingly, of Bloomington, was arrested Saturday on charges of child neglect. Salis-Mattingly was involved in a minor car accident and while police were investigation that, she told police her five children were home alone.
Bloomington Police Sgt. Lucas Tate says police went to her home in the 500 block of South Basswood Drive to check on the children at 11:33 p.m. when officers knocked on the front door, the children inside shut off the lights and did not answer
Police gained entry and found the five children, who are 11, 8, 3, 4 and 1 years old inside. One child was asleep, the others complained about being hungry. Officers fed the children.
The oldest child told police their mother had left as it was getting dark. The mother, who was injured in the crash was transported to a local hospital.
Children Services was called and the children were released to the fathers.
