(BLOOMINGTON) - The Indiana Department of Transportation announces an upcoming chip-seal project on State Road 48, located between State Road 43 and Oard Road.
Work is scheduled to begin on today, and completed within a week, depending on the weather.
The project will require temporary lane restrictions as the treatment is applied. Flagging crews will control traffic during the operation. Motorists are encouraged to pay special attention to signs and travel at reduced speeds. Pavement markings will be removed temporarily during construction.
Although INDOT does not have an official detour for this project, it is suggested that motorists might want to find alternate routes during these few days.
Chip Seal is the treatment of the pavement surface with liquid asphalt material and course aggregate to prevent deterioration of the surface. It provides waterproofing, low-severity crack sealing, and improved friction. Chip Seal is a very economical treatment, less than 20 percent the cost of hot mix asphalt.
The Fog seal portion of the project is applied on top of the chip-seal work. Fog Seal is a light covering of diluted asphalt that helps hold the stone and increases the life of the surface. It also makes the road black, which makes pavement markings more visible.
INDOT urges all drivers to be aware of work zone locations, practice safe driving habits and navigate all work zones cautiously. Drivers can learn the locations of highway work zones ahead of time by visiting www.TrafficWise.in.gov or by calling 1-800-261-ROAD (7623).
