(SOLSBERRY) - One Greene County firefighter was overcome with heat while fighting a barn fire Thursday night.
According to Eastern Fire Department Deputy Chief Austin Combs, the firefighter was treated at a local hospital for a heat-related illness after firefighter spent more than 5 hours battling a barn fire in the 7000 block of North Britton Road around 7:30 p.m..
The hot and humid temperatures combined with the heat from the fire, caused firefighters to struggle. Austin says lost conditions combined make it difficult on firefighters and can be dangerous.
When firefighters arrived the single-story, wooden framed barn with tin siding was engulfed in flames and it collapsed, Combs said.
Combs says the 100-by-80 foot barn and its contents were a total loss. It was full of farm equipment, tractors, a truck and grain bins.
Combs says it took firefighters about two hours to extinguish the blaze, and another three hours to extinguish hot spots. Area firefighters from Van Buren, Center, Clay and Highland townships assisted.
Combs says the fire is under investigation and they have not yet determined what started the blaze.
