(MEDORA) - An effort to boost student support for athletics gained the backing of school trustees.
"Our athletes work so hard and sometimes the fan support is not there," Superintendent Tom Judd told the Medora Community Schools Board of Trustees.
That's why school officials, especially athletic director Dennis Pace, recently put together a new ticket structure for athletic events - one that allows all Medora students to attend home events free, Judd said.
The change includes a $1 increase in adult ticket prices to $5.
Judd said that's comparable to what Medora fans pay when they travel to other gymnasiums to watch the Hornets.
"Our people have gotten a bargain going to ballgames here," Judd said of the $4 adult ticket price paid in the past. Prices for student tickets from other schools will be $4 instead of $3, but the All-Sport Family Pass was cut from $90 to $75.
Pace said he hopes more students will attend volleyball and boys and girls basketball games if the students don't have to pay.
"Our goal is to do what we can to get the kids involved," Pace said. "There's really no reason why the kids can't come."
He said he doesn't believe allowing students in for free will hurt financially because many of the high school students are players or cheerleaders and already get in for free.
The younger students, in fact, may have more money to spend on conĀ¬cessions, Pace said.
Judd said the plans are to have a student cheer section with the pep band in the same area.
"If this doesn't say the school board and administration is supporting athletics, I don't know what would say it," Judd said.
Judd said the school's athletes work hard, but sometimes the fan support is not there.
Trustee Dennis Wayman said he could not imagine the change would have a negative effect overall.
