(MITCHELL) - During a special Board of Public Works and Safety meeting Thursday, members opted to purchase two Trane air-conditioning units for the city-owned community building in Mitchell.
Krystal Shetler, of the Times-Mail reports, on Tuesday, board members learned two of the three units that cool the community building were failing. The building, rented out for banquets, receptions and other special events, is booked every weekend through the month of June.
Members scheduled a special meeting for Thursday to allow them time to investigate what type of units were better so they could make a more informed decision.
After further investigation, board member and local businessman Terry Slone suggested the city go with the two Trane units from Edwards Heating and Cooling that provide variable speeds and operate at 15 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio), instead of the less expensive 13 SEER units.
Edwards issued a bid to install the two units for $13,177, and those will be installed within the next week - just in time for graduation weekend, which is when the building is rented out for four straight days.
Slone's motion passed, 3-0.
Also, the board voted to purchase 20 more neighborhood watch signs that will be installed throughout the city.
Mayor Gary Pruett said a vendor came to Mitchell and offered to sell the city the signs at half the cost it paid for the first 20 signs. The city bought the first 20 signs for $20 each. The new signs will cost $10 each, Pruett said.
The neighborhood watch group, organized by Perry Reynolds, is actively working to be an "extra set of eyes" to aid police officers.
The group's next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at City Hall. Anyone interested in the program is urged to attend.
