(BEDFORD) - A charter ceremony will take place today at noon at Mr. Gatti’s for the new service club Civitan Club which is forming in Bedford.
Civitan Club of Bedford is a member of Civitan International. New members will be welcomed by representative from the organization's international, regional and district levels.
Becky Naughton-Wright, of the Times-Mail, reports the new club will hold meetings the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from noon to 1 p.m. at Mr. Gatti's.
The club's charter President, Phil R. Ford, executive director of Westview Nursing and Rehab in Bedford, said membership is open to everyone with an interest in serving the Bedford community.
He says service is the key behind behind Civitan. Ever since its establishment in 1917, Civitan has taught the benefits received through volunteering," he said in an email message.
"All ages are welcome. If their appears to be an interest for a number of teenagers, then we assist by starting a Junior Civitan Club sponsored by our Bedford club."
Civitan International has more than 40,000 members.
The organization has helped establish the Civitan International Research Center at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, which assists scientists and physicians in looking to improve the lives of adults and children with developmental disabilities.
"The local Civitan Club of Bedford will share in that mission, while concentrating much of its service locally," Ford added.
For more information about the club, call Ford at 279-4494.
