(UNDATED) - Free lunches for children and low-cost meals for adults will be offered in Mitchell starting June 4.
Alda McIntosh, food service director for the Mitchell schools, says volunteers are needed to help supervise children.
North Lawrence schools have participated in the program for the past few years. The Division of School and Community Nutrition of the federal Department of Education provides the money and the food. The idea is to fill a nutritional gap that some families experience during the summer, when school is not in session.
People 18 and younger can eat free. Adults pay a modest fee, which in Mitchell will be $2.50. In Mitchell, meals will be served at Burris Elementary School from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The program will begin June 4 and end July 20.
All children in the North Lawrence Community Schools District children can come to the Bedford Middle School Lunch Room from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for breakfast, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for lunch starting on June 1st. The program will last until July 27th. Adults can take advantage of the breakfast and lunch programs, $1.30 for breakfast, $2.40 for lunch.
