(OOLITIC) - The Oolitic Town Council will send out letters to residents who are not keeping their lawns mowed or their property is littered with junk.
The letters will be mailed today. Currently 17 residents will receive letters.
"This has been a problem for a long time," Council President Delvin Nikirk says. "It is something that has to be done. They (residents) have left us with no other choice, but to pursue the matter legally."
Residents will have three days to mow their lawns and 10 days to remove debris from their property. If not residents could face fines.
In other business:
* The council approved a resolution for Southern Indiana Development Commission to award grant funds to families that are 55-years-old or older or to those with disabilities to recieve funds to do repairs on their homes.
Eight families will be chosen, though an application process. Each family will be awarded $19,633 to make needed repairs to the homes that the family would otherwise not be able to afford. The total grant awarded was for $173,500.
Anyone wishing to apply for the grant award can contact Town Hall for more information.
* Delvin Nikirk invited everyone to attend a meeting at Dollens Elementary School on May 10th to discuss applying for a $250,000 grant to put sidewalks on the east side of the school.
The town was awarded a grant to put sidewalks on the west side of the school. This second grant would complete the project.
"We need everyone there we can possibly get," Nikirk says. "This is a project for the kids. It is badly needed and will keep the kids safe."
* Oolitic Reserve Officer Jeff Franklin has completed all the necessary training to begin patrolling Oolitic Streets. He will begin his duties today. Franklin will work when Oolitic Town Marshal Jon Jeffries and Deputy Bill Allen are not available.
