(ORLEANS) - The Orleans High School Academic Team captured the social studies state championship at the 26th annual Indiana Academic Super Bowl held Saturday at Purdue University.
The defending champion Orleans scholars edged out Jac-Cen-Del on the final question to earn Class 4 honors for the second straight year.
The new state championship banner brings the total to seven that the academic teams have won in the school's history. In other rounds, the Orleans fine arts and interdisciplinary squads both earned state runner-up medals and plaques due to their impressive academic performances.
Orleans was one of only fourteen schools that qualified three or more squads for the state finals sponsored by the Indiana Association of School Principals and Purdue University.
The social studies team consisted of Andrew Johnson, Connor Hammond, David Ross, Alexis Lamb, Callie Mathers, and Jesse Wells.
Members of fine arts team were Riley Hawkins, McKayla Padgett, Hannah Ervin, Nicki Chance, Bree Sullivan, Alison Matthew, Mersadi's Curtsinger, and Hannah Lee.
The interdisciplinary squad was made up of David Ross, Andrew Johnson, Riley Hawkins, Travis Land, Connor Hammond, Chase Silvers, Hannah Lee, and Bree Sullivan.
Coaches for the teams were Kristina Hole, Leah Morgan, and Kathy Wilson.
The high school competition is made up of five subject matter rounds (English, science, social studies, mathematics, and fine arts) and a sixth interdisciplinary round in which questions may come from any and all of the subject matter rounds. Schools were divided into four classes based on school size, and a champion was named for each class. At the competition, teams were given twenty-five multiple-choice questions. The squads had twenty seconds to converse and choose an answer. The 2012 theme was Colonial and Revolutionary America.
