(PEKIN) - Pekin is adding a 5K to its list of activities associated with its popular Fourth of July celebration - the oldest consecutive Fourth celebration in the nation.
The inaugural Independence 5K Run/Walk will be held Saturday, June 30, with registration opening at 7 a.m. in the Pekin Park.
The walk starts at the park shelterhouse and walkers/runners will end up at that location as well. The route winds through the picturesque countryside outside the town.
Those who pre-register pay just $20, while those signing up the day of the walk will pay $25. Participants will receive a free T-shirt.
Trophies will be presented to the first and second place finishers in the men's and women's groups. Ribbons will be given to the top three finishers by age group.
Age groups are: Children ages 3-6, 7-10, 11-12. Teens: 13-15 and 16-19.
Adults: 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 34-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50 and older.
