(BLOOMINGTON) - A judge awarded $3 million to Bill Brand’s widow and son.
Bill Brand of Bedford, a jailer for the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, was shot in the head and died as he drove home from work on Ind. 37 near Zikes Road in the early morning hours of Feb. 8, 2005.
Police who investigated the crime believe Steinberg picked his victim at random.
Judicial officer Michael Hoff ordered Benjamin Steinberg pay $3 million to Stacy Brand, Brand's window and the couple's 5-year-old son John "Jake" Brand.
Steinberg, 30 at the time, of Bloomington, was sentenced to 65 years in prison for murdering Brand. He is serving his sentence at Pendleton Correctional Facility, with his earliest possible release date in 2041.
The Bloomington man, who had been treated in the past for mental illness, paid $800 for a semi-automatic rifle and then used it to shoot Brand.
Stacy Brand filed the wrongful death suit, seeking $1 million, seven months before police arrested and charged Steinberg in the murder of her husband. She filed the suit just prior to the two-year statute of limitations expiring.
