(ALLEN CREEK) - A June 22 hike with the Monroe Lake naturalist will explore the fossil beds of Allens Creek State Recreation Area.
The hike starts at 6:30 p.m. It is rated as moderate and expected to last 2 ½ hours.
Participation is free but limited to 20 people. Registration is required by 3 p.m. the day of the hike.
To register, call the Paynetown activity center at (812) 837-9967, or email jvance@dnr.IN.gov. There is typically a waiting list for this hike, so early registration is recommended.
The Allens Creek fossil beds are filled with crinoids and corals, remnants of the shallow sea that once covered Indiana.
Participants should wear good hiking shoes and bring water. Directions to Allens Creek SRA will be provided upon registration.
