(BEDFORD) - Bedford North Lawrence High School now has two outdoor basketball goals.
The two basketball goals built by welding students in the North Lawrence Career Center were installed on the west side of the school, on a corner of the lot where the BNL marching band practices. Another will be placed near the tennis courts.
According to welding teacher David McCart the goals can be used by students or the public. The idea came from a school board member and when it was suggested the Career Center students in Welding I and Welding II could make them, McCart and his students readily obliged.
McCart says students spent a little less than two weeks to complete the project.
Welding student and senior Zack Emberton says making the goals was "long and tedious." McCart says one piece alone weighed about 350 pounds. The students also had to spend a lot of time measuring circumference and diameter, which McCart says prompted groans from a few students who thought they wouldn't need to use their geometry skills in welding class.
Also helping with the project was Jay Combs of the NLCS maintenance department.
