Couple Arrested After Stealing From Wal-Mart Stores

Last updated on Wednesday, June 13, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Two people were arrested Tuesday night after they attempted to steal a sound system from Wal-Mart.

Arrested were 34-year-old Jason Murphy and 19-year-old Courtney Chunn, both of Indianapolis. Both have been charged with theft.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, the couple is wanted for several thefts from Wal-Marts across the state.

"The couple have been under surveillance for sometime," Parsley says. "They are linked to several thefts from Wal-Marts in Martinsville, Indianapolis, Camby, Bloomington and here."

In Bedford on April 24th and May 18th the couple alleged stole two 40-inch televisions on each visit.

Parsley says the couple would enter a Wal-Mart and load items in their carts, normally home entertainment items, to steal. Then Murphy would head to the check-outs and purchase a small item.

"He would distract the cashier by asking about employment at the store," Parsley says. "While Miss Chunn would pushed the cart loaded with stolen items past the cashier."

After the purchase the couple would head to the customer service desk and again ask about employment and then fill out an application for employment.

"They would thank the employees for their assistance and then push the cart filled with stolen items out of the store as if they had purchased the items," Parsley says. "But this time we were ready for them."

Last night the couple attempted to steal a home entertainment system.

"Our detectives are in the process of contacting other police departments and gathering and sharing information on the arrest," Parsley says. "Other charges are pending."
